A Jefferson Parish grand jury has indicted a Westwego man on a rape charge, more than three months after police arrested him on suspicion of the rape of a 4-year-old girl in 2016.
Tarance Samuels, 19, of 117 Laroussini Street in Westwego, was charged with first-degree rape of a victim under the age of 13 and sexual battery of a child under 13 on Thursday (Feb. 23), according to a bill of information from the 24th Judicial District Court in Gretna. Samuels pleaded not guilty to Magistrate Judge Paul Schneider on Friday.
Authorities say Samuels assaulted the victim on Nov. 10, 2016, at his residence. The child's mother learned about the rape the same day and took the child to a hospital in New Orleans, according to Lt. Eric Orlando, spokesman for the Westwego Police Department. Westwego Police arrested Samuels the next day, and Orlando said Samuels confessed to the rape when detectives questioned him.
Samuels remained in Jefferson Parish jail Monday in lieu of a $550,000 bond, according to court documents. If convicted of rape, he faces a life sentence without parole, probation or suspended sentence. If convicted of sexual battery, he faces up to 99 years in prison. Samuels is due back in court March 16 for a status hearing.
