Microsoft recently announced the availability of Office 365 in Cambodia and Myanmar. One of the early adopters in Cambodia is the Child Protection Unit (CPU), a non-profit organization combating child abuse and exploitation in partnership with the Cambodian National Police.
The goal is to enable its employees to collaborate efficiently and communicate securely.
“In the past, we used a paper system for managing our information flow and as the organization grew, we could not keep up with a system that required manual input as it was not scalable. With the deployment of Office 365 and Microsoft Azure, we have digitalized our operational processes and built our central case management system by leveraging the cloud,” said James McCabe, Director, CPU.
“Our field workers can now share, track and better manage information and we are able to provide the police with real-time insights to assist their investigations. Ultimately, this enables us to better protect and offer holistic support to our victims,” he added.
Microsoft shared in a video that an estimated 1.2 million children are trafficked every year in Cambodia. Twenty-two percent of human trafficking victims are trafficked for commercial sexual exploitation, of whom 55 percent are women or girls.
Major-General Lim Sokha Raksmey of the Cambodian National Police, the government is trying the improve the situation through technology.
According to Tola Dy, Microsoft’s Tola Dy, Datec Asia Pacific Ltd. Software Development Team Leader, the system provides may advantage for CPU and their staff such as being accessible at home or on the worksite. It allows the CPU to find correlated information about the victim, the perpetrator, the crime scene and time through the system.
“Before the collaboration, we couldn't receive data updates on our smartphones or iPad and we can check the information remotely even at home,” attested Som Vattana, Deputy Manager, Child Protection, CPU.
Microsoft has previously partnered with governments and organizations to improve trade and drive competitiveness through technology, as well as to empower companies undergoing a digital transformation in a new mobile-first, cloud-first world.
Michelle Simmons, general manager, Southeast Asia New Markets, Microsoft Asia Pacific, said that Cambodia and Myanmar are emerging economies that are undergoing swift growth and modernization across all sectors.
