Child rapist performed on X Factor
A violent paedophile who performed on The X Factor while wanted by police for raping a 10-year-old girl worked at a Merseyside hospital.
Manuel Pons Sanchez worked as a porter for a private firm at Whiston hospital while Spanish police hunted him over the crime.
Simon Cowell was completely unaware Pons Sanchez was a wanted man when he made it to the bootcamp round of the show in 2009, winning praise from the X Factor judge.
Pons Sanchez was jailed for 23 years and six months last August for a series of attacks on the girl when she was aged between six and 10, the Mirror reported.
The Spaniard worked as a porter for private firm Medirest at Whiston after an arrest warrant had been issued for him.
A court in Palma, Majorca, heard he had beaten the youngster and tied her to a bed, leaving her suffering from anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Pons Sanchez, from Menorca, made it to the bootcamp round of The X Factor in 2009. After hearing him sing U2’s With Or Without You, Cowell said: “Hey, Manuel, we like you. I don’t think anyone’s going to try harder.”
Pons Sanchez also appeared on the ITV2 spin-off show Xtra Factor, playing Fawlty Towers character Manuel in a sketch with Holly Willoughby.
But producers were unaware he had been reported to Spanish police by his victim’s mother in 2007 and an arrest warrant issued.
He had fled Spain in 2004 after raping the girl and was living in Liverpool while working at Whiston, whose staff were unaware he was wanted.
It appears the Spanish authorities failed to notify their British counterparts, despite knowing in 2008 that Pons Sanchez was in the UK.
An NHS Trust spokesman said: “We have been assured by Medirest that they complied with all mandatory NHS pre-employment requirements. This included an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check which did not highlight any issues.”
A Medirest spokeswoman said of Pons Sanchez: “Prior to his employment all the relevant background and security checks were taken, including an enhanced DBS check.”
