A jury convicted a Binghamton man late Friday on sexual assault charges related to abuse of three young female victims.
James R. Starnes, 51, will be sentenced May 5 in Broome County Court and faces a maximum possible penalty of 60 years to life in state prison. During Starnes' trial, prosecutors argued he committed multiple sexual abuses against girls who were ages 12, 14, and 9 when the incidents occurred. Some of the abuses, prosecutors said, took place over the course of at least three months, and dated back to 2013.
The jury's verdict found Starnes guilty of the following felony counts: predatory sexual assault against a child, second-degree criminal sexual act, second-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse and second-degree course of sexual conduct against a child. Prosecutors say the minimum penalty Starnes faces is 25 years to life in prison.
Jurors began their deliberations Friday afternoon. Starnes is being held in the Broome County jail while awaiting sentencing.
The trial was prosecuted by Chief Assistant District Attorney Michael A. Korchak and Assistant District Attorney Lisa A. Bideaux, assisted by DA's office investigators.
In a statement late Friday, District Attorney Steve Cornwell described sex crimes against children as especially heinous.
“This was not an easy case, but we never gave up or stopped fighting for justice for the victims," Cornwell said.
Defense lawyer Christopher Grace argued during the trial that Binghamton police left loose ends during their investigation, such as not pursuing an acquaintance of the victims as a possible alternate suspect.
Prosecutors used witness testimony during the trial to illustrate how police launched their criminal investigation in late April 2016, which led to in Starnes' arrest.
During testimony Thursday, Binghamton police Investigator Carl Peters testified he questioned Starnes at length about the abuses in late April. In early May, he said, Starnes was notified by phone that he would be arrested.
The most severe charge in a nine-count indictment had accused Starnes of sexually assaulting a girl who was then 12.
Starnes engaged in two or more acts of illegal sexual conduct against the 12-year-old girl between spring 2013 and May 25, 2014, the day before the girl turned 13, according to the indictment.

SEX ASSAULT: Man found guilty in 'predatory' abuse of children Anthony Borrelli March 3, 2017

Two men have been charged with sexually assaulting a girl over a period of several years beginning when she was 6 years old in 2008, state police at Lickdale said Thursday.
Joseph L. Wenzler, 52, of 1022 Walnut St., Lebanon, was charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault, endangering the welfare of a child, corruption of a minor, indecent assault and intimidation, retaliation, or obstruction of child abuse cases.
Eric T. Snyder, 53, of 348 W. Main Ave., Myerstown, was charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault, endangering the welfare of a child, corruption of a minor and furnishing alcohol to a minor.
The girl disclosed the sexual abuse by the two men to her relatives, who reported it to the Pennsylvania Childline hotline.
Wenzler was charged with sexually assaulting the girl at his home between the time she was 6 and 12 years old.
Wenzler admitted to state police that he had sexual contact with the girl in his home, according to a police affidavit. He was uncertain how long he sexually assaulted the girl, police stated in the affidavit.
The girl told state police that she initially did not know what Wenzler was doing was wrong until she learned about good touching and bad touching in a school class when she was about 10. Around the same time, she began keeping a journal about how she was abused, the girl told state police. She said her mother found the journal, and the girl told her mother the incidents described in it were dreams.
She said Wenzler occasionally told her not to tell anyone about he was doing to her.
Wenzler’s bail was set $50,000. His preliminary hearing before District Judge Maria Dissinger is scheduled for March 30.
Snyder was charged with having sex with the girl and sexually assaulting her at his home when she was between the ages of 9 and 12 beginning in September 2011, state police said.
The girl told authorities that she was once sexually assaulted by Snyder after he gave her an alcohol drink while they were playing pool in his garage during the summer of 2016.
Snyder declined to speak to a state police investigator, according to a police affidavit.
Snyder’s bail was set at $100,000 at his arraignment. His preliminary hearing is set for March 9 before District Judge Anthony Verna.

Facing sentencing Friday for preying sexually upon five children, a Bethlehem man backtracked, asking instead to withdraw from his plea agreement and go to trial.

Lorenzo Culver Jr.'s request won't be opposed by Northampton County prosecutors, who say the evidence against the 46-year-old defendant includes cellphone videos that recorded the sexual abuse.
Assistant District Attorney Anthony Casola said that at trial, Culver will risk what would add up to a life sentence if he is convicted of all charges, given a bad prior record and the seriousness of the offenses.
"It's astronomical," Casola said of the potential prison time.

Last fall, Culver accepted a plea bargain on the cusp of trial under which sentencing guidelines recommended a minimum term of at least 16 years in prison, though prosecutors planned to seek more time.
In asking to back out of the agreement, Culver offered no explanation. Senior Judge Leonard Zito instructed defense attorney Ed Andres to file a written request before he rules.
Culver was charged after Bethlehem police concluded he abused four boys and a girl whose ages ranged from 6 to 16. According to court records, the encounters stretched from 2011 to 2015.
Police said the assaults occurred at Culver's Ettwein Street home, and some were recorded. Investigators recovered several of those videos on Culver and the children's cellphones, which captured his voice and on one occasion depicted him on camera, authorities said.

Culver pleaded guilty in October to one count of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and no contest to two others. He also pleaded guilty to five counts of producing child pornography.
The charges were filed after a year-long investigation. Initially accused of raping a 12-year-old boy, Culver saw allegations involving four other children added weeks later by police.
The 12-year-old told authorities that Culver claimed he was teaching the boy "how to be a man," police said. Another boy, 14, said Culver supplied him with alcohol before the assaults, police said.

A jury in the 49th District Court sentenced a 66-year-old man to 40 years in prison late Thursday after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting a minor.
Seven hours of deliberations resulted in a mixed verdict as the jury found Jose Mario Treviño not guilty of continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14 years of age and guilty on two counts of sexual assault of a child.
Treviño was sentenced to 20 years and assessed a $10,000 fine for one count and 20 years with a $5,000 fine for the other count.
Senior District Court Judge Elma Salinas Ender ordered the sentences to run consecutively, meaning Treviño will serve a total of 40 years in prison.
The jury submitted questions to the court during the course of the deliberations, resulting in the court reporter reading limited portions of the child’s testimony back to them.
‘I trusted this man’
The sentencing portion of the trial began at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The child’s father took the stand to request justice for his daughter while Treviño’s wife asked for a benevolent sentence.
The girl’s father said, “I trusted this man, truly … I did trust you and the harm you have done to my daughter has no pardon.”
Assistant District Attorney Joaquin Rodriguez suggested a just punishment in Treviño’s case would be the maximum sentence of 20 years for each count.
Javier Montemayor Jr., Treviño’s attorney, said his client understands that every crime has a consequence. He said his client respects the verdict and asked for a fair punishment.

The case began in August 2015 when the Laredo Police Department responded to a sexual assault of a child report. Upon arrival, a father said his daughter alleged she had been sexually abused by Treviño.
Treviño denied the allegations but said sleeping medication caused him to have bouts of unconsciousness that left him waking up in compromising positions.
The compromising positions allegedly included him having dreams of having sex with his wife but waking up to discover it was his female relative that he was engaging in sexual acts with.
The prosecution and defense argued over the evidence and testimony produced in the case before a verdict was reached.

Defendant sentenced for sexually assaulting child Taryn T. Walters, LAREDO MORNING TIMES March 3, 2017

A Fouke, Ark., man found guilty of rape and sexual assault of a child was sentenced to 30 years in prison Thursday.
Quentin Kyle Green, 39, assaulted the girl for the first time in 2011 on black Friday while the girl’s mother was shopping, according to a probable cause affidavit. The abuse occurred at times in a home where Green lived with the girl, her siblings and her mother as well. The girl was 10 and 11 years old at the time. Not long after making an outcry of abuse to her mother, the girl recanted. The girl told a forensic interviewer at the Children’s Advocacy Center in Texarkana last year that her family took her to a counselor following her first disclosure and the counselor told her that a court case could cost her family “a lot of money.”
Following a church service in February 2016 that reportedly addressed telling the truth, the girl told her biological father, who contacted police, accordingto the affidavit. Prosecuting Attorney Stephanie Black and Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Connie Mitchell prosecuted the case, Texarkana attorney Joe Tyler represented Green.
The jury handed down a $5,000 fine, a 25-year sentence for rape and a five-year sentence for sexual assault of a child. Circuit Judge Kirk Johnson ordered the terms to run consecutively for a total of 30 years.
A former youth wrestling coach was arrested Friday on allegations he sexually abused a child athlete he worked with for five years, Pennsylvania State police said.
Ron Gorman, 51, of Marietta, is accused of sexually abusing the now 20-year-old adult when he was 10 years old, according to a police report. The victim told police the abuse ended when he turned 15.
The abuse took place in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania where Gorman worked as a youth wrestling coach, according to the report.
Authorities said they launched an investigation in September after allegations surfaced Gorman may have been inappropriate with juvenile males in Marietta.
Cobb County sheriff’s deputies arrested Gorman at his home about 5:30 p.m., according to jail records. He is awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania.
He faces multiple charges including, rape of a child, deviate sexual intercourse with a child, unlawful contact with a minor, indecent assault and corruption of minors.
Pennsylvania authorities are working to identify other possible victims and ask that anyone with information contact Trooper Brian V. Noll at 570-839-7701.
