MILAM COUNTY, Tex. (KBTX) - A Cameron man was sentenced to life in prison for the continuous sexual abuse of a child.
Authorities say Rayford Smith was arrested in 2012 for sexually abusing a 14 year old more than 40 times.
On Friday during the punishment phase of the trial smith pleaded guilty.
During the trial he was also accused of abusing a 16- year old.
Smith is not eligible for parole.

Cameron man receives life sentence for child sexual abuse

Two child sex predators received long prison sentences Friday in separate cases in Erie and Niagara counties.
Robert W. Pavlisin Jr., of Wheatfield, “should never see the light of day” after raping two girls, said Niagara County First Assistant District Attorney Holly E. Sloma, before County Judge Matthew J. Murphy III sentenced him to 40 years in prison.
He is a predator,” said Sloma, who described how Pavlisin, 45, started relationships with adult women in his victims’ families, only to gain access to the girls.
“I agree with Ms. Sloma’s analysis,” Murphy said in court. “I agree with her observation that you’re a sexual predator.”
In Erie County, a judge said he had two hopes as he prepared to sentence Michael P. Milton, 41, for the repeated sexual assault of two young girls over more than a decade.
“First, that these two children are not scarred for the rest of their lives and that they are able to lead healthy lives. And second, that you are never released from prison,” Acting Supreme Court Justice Russell P. Buscaglia told Milton.
Buscaglia sentenced Milton to 25 years to life in prison on each of two counts of predatory sexual assault against a child, to run consecutively. He also ordered the maximum sentences for three other convictions.
Pavlisin, of Sy Road, pleaded guilty Oct. 12 to first-degree rape of an 11-year-old girl in 2002, and to second-degree rape, use of a child in a sexual performance and second-degree kidnapping for victimizing a 13-year-old girl early in 2016. He also admitted to obstructing governmental administration for an hour-long armed standoff with police at a storage building on New Road in Niagara Falls on April 22.
The victim of the 2002 rape didn’t report it to police until she saw news reports about the standoff, in which Niagara Falls police sought to arrest Pavlisin for raping the 13-year-old.
Sloma said that in the earlier case, Pavlisin had a relationship going with the girl’s mother. In the 2016 case, he had started a relationship with the victim’s grandmother.
“That was just a front,” Sloma charged. “He was there to be around these young girls and victimize them.”
In the 2016 case, Pavlisin pleaded guilty to taking cellphone videos of sex acts with the girl in the back of a vehicle. Sloma said Pavlisin did that “so he could watch himself repeatedly rape and sodomize this 13-year-old girl.
"I don’t see any redeeming qualities about this man, not one," she said.
In a pre-sentencing interview with a probation officer, Pavlisin denied committing any crime against the 2002 victim and accused the more recent victim of “coming on to him,” according to the prosecutor.
Defense attorney Jenelle Messer disputed Sloma’s claim that Pavlisin was trying to evade responsibility.
“He pled guilty. I don’t know what more responsibility a person can take,” Messer said. “At no time has he ever said to me this was anyone’s fault but his.”
“I do take responsibility, full responsibility. I’m sorry that it happened,” Pavlisin said. “I apologize to the victims’ family and my family for letting everybody down.”
The victims were not in the courtroom Friday.
In Milton's case, a jury convicted him in January of the sexual assault charges, plus two charges of rape and one count of a criminal sexual act against a child. Both victims testified about the assaults, which began when each girl was about 6 years old. One victim is now 19, the other is 10 years old. Neither is related to Milton.
The abuse occurred at different times when each was placed in Milton’s care by people who trusted him, according to the girl’s testimony. To keep his conduct secret, Milton either bribed the children, threatened them or convinced them that they would get in trouble if they told.
The abuse was discovered in 2015 when the mother of the younger victim was looking for photos on Milton’s phone and discovered video that he recorded while forcing the older girl to perform oral sex. The mother immediately became fearful for her own children and asked her daughter to tell her if anything had happened to her.
The mother testified that, when her own daughter, then 9 years old, revealed what Milton had been doing, she still was in disbelief. She took the child to her own doctor and then to Women & Children’s Hospital, where the mother’s worst fears were confirmed.
Prosecutor Rosanne E. Johnson, chief of the DA’s Special Victims Bureau, described the assaults as “a horrific breach of trust." She reminded the judge that Milton never voiced “the slightest bit of responsibility” for his actions.
Johnson praised both girls for their strength in being willing to testify, even though their experiences left them cautious and mistrustful of people.
He ruined her childhood,” Johnson said, of the older girl.
Johnson also told the judge on behalf of the young child of how the assault changed her from a little girl who always was happy to someone who felt depressed, confused and sad.
Defense attorney Robert M. Goldstein acknowledged the inevitability of a harsh sentence but said Milton continues to maintain his innocence of every charge except rape in the third degree for the incident captured on the cell phone recording. Milton previously claimed through his attorney that the contact was consensual sex, although he admitted the victim was underage.
Goldstein said that he will file a notice of appeal. When given the chance to speak at his sentencing, Milton gave an ambiguous response.
“I’m going to get the help I need – whatever that may be,” he said.
In addition to the double sentences of 25 to life, Buscaglia issued orders of protection for both victims and for the younger child’s mother.
Outside of court after the sentencing, family members, social workers and friends of the victims expressed gratitude for the outcome. Among the group, standing with the 10-year-old, was Argos, the therapy dog who has been at her side throughout the entire case. According to Andrew Skolnick, the dog’s owner, the group planned to celebrate Argos’s 12th birthday.

Man Wanted for Sexual Abuse of Child Fox News Rio Grande Valley | Mar 3, 2017

A VICTIM of child sexual assault in Echuca more than 20 years ago has told her abuser in court of the emotional pain that still remains, while also criticising police for failing to prosecute the case when she first came forward.
Peter Glenn Pryse, 40, of Bendigo, pleaded guilty in the Bendigo County Court on Thursday to four counts of sexual penetration with a child under 16.
Pryse was aged between 18 and 20 when he engaged in sexual encounters with the girl, who was aged in her early teens.
The court heard details of 14 individual examples of sexual intercourse. They included instances of Pryse holding the girl down with force, which left the victim “upset and frightened”.
On another occasion, the girl attempted to resist by “pushing him away”.
The girl was one of three victims to contact police in the late 1990s about their experiences with Pryse. Her matter was not prosecuted until recently.
In her victim impact statement, read to the court on Thursday, she described the ongoing effects of post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression, while also remaining in a “hyper vigilant state”.
The victim spoke directly to Pryse in court.
I was sexually abused by you, Peter Pryse,” she said.
I suffered a nervous breakdown when the traumatic memories resurfaced.”
The victim also spoke of the “disappointment” at the lack of police prosecution against Pryse.
Judge Paul Lacava sympathised with the victim, and agreed that police had “let her down badly”.
“Even an investigator at the bottom of the class could have investigated this,” he said.
The court heard Pryse suffered abuse as a child, and believed his “relationship” with the victim was positive for both parties.
Pryse received an 18-month suspended jail sentence in 1999 after police proceeded with the complaints made against him from two other women.
He was sentenced to four years and nine months with a non-parole period in 2003 for three counts of indecent acts with children under 16, and a further four years after more allegations were brought against him.
Pryse was released on bail despite opposition from the prosecution, and will be sentenced in Bendigo on Thursday.

An Overbrook church is being sued for aiding and abetting the sexual abuse of two children.
A court review of the case is scheduled on Monday, March 6, in Osage County District Court.
The plaintiffs in the case are four unnamed individuals, including two minors. Grace Community Church, in Overbrook, and Richard Calderwood are listed as defendants.
On Feb. 21, Calderwood, 53, was granted 36 months on probation in connection with two counts of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child in Wabaunsee County District Court. His sentence includes lifetime registration as a sex offender. According to the original criminal complaint which was filed in October 2014, the crimes took place between May 1, 2013, and Jan. 1, 2014, and involved children who were 4 and 6 years old at the time the complaint was filed.
The civil lawsuit, filed in September 2016, alleges two children attended Grace Community Church and Cultivate Community Church, which was a “plant” church supervised by GCC. GCC is located in Osage County while CCC is located in Wabaunsee County.
The plaintiffs contend Calderwood was a volunteer with both churches and allowed to supervise and access children at both churches, as well as a home where services were held on some occasions. The sexual abuse occurred between 2013 and 2014 during services and events sponsored by the church, the plaintiff’s petition reads.
Lead pastor Travis Van Meter came to Grace Community Church in September 2015 after the relationship between GCC and CCC began. His understanding of the relationship between the two churches, through looking back at church documents, was GCC was one of many churches that aided CCC financially.
Over the course of a number of years, as CCC grew and became more independent, the financial aid decreased annually and eventually ceased, he said.
“Our involvement with (CCC) was in no way in a leadership role,” Van Meter said.
Cultivate Community Church wasn’t a “plant” church supervised by Grace Community Church, GCC’s attorney Vincent Cox argues in an answer to the lawsuit.
The plaintiffs allege GCC “received multiple reports of Calderwood’s inappropriate activities and boundaries with children. However those reports were silenced and Calderwood continued to have access to minors, the petition says.
The lawsuit lists seven counts including child sexual abuse; failure to supervise children; negligent supervision, retention and failure to warn; negligent infliction of emotional distress; breach of fiduciary duty; outrage; and action for restitution. The plaintiffs ask that defendants pay for present and future expenses related to medical, psychiatric and health care that resulted from the “unlawful and improper conduct.”
Van Meter said he couldn’t comment fully on the ongoing case, but that the allegations pertaining to the church aren’t true.
“I do believe the church did their due diligence concerning the issue at hand,” he said.
In the answer to the petition, Cox denies allegations that sexual abuse took place on premises used for the church’s services and events or that they knew or should have known of any risk Calderwood posed.
Rebecca Randles, an attorney for the plaintiffs, also said Calderwood was a church Elder, a position Van Meter disputes Calderwood having.
According to Grace Community Church’s 225-page policy manual, dated Jan. 1, 2017, “The role of the Elders at Grace Community Church is to oversee all the policies of the church and guide the direction of the church in such a way that it fulfills our purpose, to glorify Christ in all things.”
Elders are recommended by pastoral staff and confirmed by the congregation, according to the manual.
Van Meter said the situation is a painful one that no one wants to go through. The church’s focus is on the gospel and having a relationship with Jesus Christ. Things like this detract from that, he said.
“We’re hoping it can end amicably,” Van Meter said.
He added that the church needs to heal and that he’s confident with God’s power and peace, they will be able to.
Calderwood’s attorney, Michael Helbert, denies the sexual abuse in his answer to the plaintiff’s petition.
Randles said she believes there are more victims.

SAN ANTONIO - A 36-year-old San Antonio man is charged with sexually assaulting three young sisters for several years, beginning in 2009.
Edward Elias Price is charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
He is accused of making the girls, now ages 15, 12 and 11, perform sexual acts on him during an eight-year time span.
The Department of Family Protective Services received a report from JL Matthey Middle School that a student revealed she had been sexually abused. A DFPS special investigator interviewed the child victim who said other siblings living with her were also being sexually abused.
On Tuesday, the sisters were given forensic interviews. All three said the abuse started around 2009, with the youngest remembering she was only 3 years old and in pre-kindergarten at the time.
The arrest affidavits include graphic details, such as inappropriate touching, forced sex acts and threats to burn down the girls' home or injure family members should any of them tell on Price.
KSAT-12 is not reporting the relationship between the girls and Price in order to protect their identities. Price was booked into the Bexar County Jail Saturday with bail totaling $225,000, $75,000 for each count. Records show he had bonded out of jail.
