New measures against child sexual abuse by Blue Helmets
United Nations, (Prensa Latina) Antonio Guterres, secretary general of the United Nations, launched today a new strategy to handle the sexual abuse and exploitation perpetrated by blue helmets, an initiative that includes prevention and harsh response to the scourge.
The measures suggested by Guterres will be discussed by the UN General Assembly, a key step approaching State Members as leading roles in the fight against these crimes, which triggered a scandal last year and cast a shadow on the UN work.
Guterres said that the new approach has the victims as main target, as well as principles of openness, justice and account for actions.
The strategy is the result of a work fostered by Guterres on January 6th, some days after relieving Ban Ki-moon of his post, who also took actions to fight sexual abuse following the reports on such crimes committed by blue helmets and French troops in the Central African Republic.
According to Guterres, sexual abuse and exploitation are phenomena rooted in gender-based violence and discrimination, a situation that might improve with the increased presence of women in UN activities, including blue helmets.
