NAINITAL: Parents of a six-year-old girl student, along with city residents, staged a protest outside a private school in Haldwani on Wednesday morning accusing a staff member of sexually assaulting their daughter and demanding his immediate arrest.
Nainital district magistrate Deepak Rawat and senior superintendent of police Janmejay Khanduri reached the spot to contain the situation and assured the angry protesters that action would be taken against the accused.
However, they called off their protest only when the accused was arrested in the evening.
The SSP told TOI, “The accused, Bablu Singh Bisht (26), who works as a support staff at the school, and was on run, has been arrested from Lal Kuan area in the evening. A case has been registered against the accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) 2012. Such acts are unacceptable in any civil society.”
The school management or principal was not available for a comment.
Gurpreet Singh (36), a resident of Haldwani, who was also part of the sit-in, said, “This is disgusting incident. School is the place, where parents think their children are safe. Now, humanity has vanished. I do not know what to say, except that police should bring the accused to book.”
On April 17, an eight-year-old girl was raped by a 27-year-old in Lalkuan of Nainital district. The accused is on run.
In November 2014, the body of seven-year-old girl who was raped and murdered was found after five days of intense search operation. The heinous crime had sparked a state-wide protest, and a Public Interest Litigation was filed before the Uttarakhand high court on November 26 by HC advocates demanding a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the case. The victim is now remembered as ‘Little Nirbhaya’.
In a ground breaking decision on March 12, 2016, a designated special court of the POCSO Act had awarded death penalty to Akhtar Ali, one of the two accused of raping and murdering a seven-year-old in the town in November 2014.
On March 5, 2016, two men, Akhtar Ali and Prem Pal, were found guilty whereas a third accused, Poksi, was acquitted of the charges. Parents of the victim broke down after the decision.
