Nursery worker admitted sexually abusing 18 children

A charity has described the case of a Solihull nursery worker who admitted sexually abusing 18 children as “truly shocking”.

The NSPCC said it was hard to believe that someone trusted to work with children could commit such crimes.
The charity was speaking out after nursery worker Jamie Chapman, 28, appeared at Birmingham crown court and pleaded guilty to 31 charges.
Many of the victims were pupils at two schools, including a primary school, where Chapman worked as a teaching assistant.
He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on May 22.
Speaking after Chapman had admitted the offences, the NSPCC issued a statement. It read: “It is truly shocking that someone trusted to work with children could commit such grave and horrific crimes against so many young victims.
Child sexual abuse and exploitation can cause untold damage, and so it is vital his victims now receive the necessary support to help them recover and move forward.”
Chapman, of Tamar Drive, Smiths Wood, admitted one charge of rape, 21 charges of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, four of distributing indecent images and five of making indecent images.
Not guilty pleas to a further 13 counts were accepted by the prosecution
Police had previously said there was no evidence to suggest any inappropriate contact between the worker and children at the nursery where he had been employed.
The court heard how the crimes covered 18 victims and occurred between 2011 and 2016.
A number of the victims were pupils at schools where Chapman had been employed.
• The NSPCC said anyone concerned about a child’s welfare can contact its helpline anonymously 24/7 by phoning 0808 800 5000, emailing help@nspcc.org.uk or by texting 88858.
Children themselves can also contact Childline in confidence at any time on 0800 1111 or via www.childline.org.uk.
