84-year-old man arrested for sexually abusing 4-year-old
Idaho Falls Police on Friday arrested an 84-year-old man for a report he sexually abused a 4-year-old girl.
Charles Cecil Carroll, of Idaho Falls, was booked into the Bonneville County Jail, said a police news release.
Carroll is charged with one count of lewd conduct with a child younger than 16. He had bond set at $50,000 and has a preliminary hearing scheduled May 12. Carroll was released to pretrial services Monday.
Court records show the victim’s mother reported the abuse to police April 6. The reported conduct is alleged to have occurred the same day at an Idaho Falls residence. The woman went to pick up the victim from the home and saw the girl touching Carroll inappropriately.
The victim’s mother immediately took the child to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center to have a sexual assault examination done. An exam was performed at a later date. In a forensic interview, the victim told investigators that Carroll sexually abused her and made her perform sex acts on Carroll.
When interviewed by investigators Carroll told them the girl had touched him inappropriately. He told investigators he didn’t think it was wrong for the girl to touch him because she was exploring and it was not sexual in nature.
Carroll told investigators he did not think the reported abuse was notable, telling the investigators “well, no, I do not think it’s a problem,” court records show.
Carroll told investigators he has a bad memory and doesn’t recall everything that happened April 6, but to rely on the victim’s statements. He told investigators he didn’t consume any alcohol.
Carroll denied performing any other sex acts on the girl.
Lewd conduct is punishable by up to life in prison.
