In a statement Wednesday to the Binghamton man who admitted raping a child, the victim's mother called him a "monster" but vowed the girl would eventually heal.
Chad F. Winans37, was sentenced in Broome County Court to spend 17½ years in state prison for his guilty plea to a felony count of first-degree rape. He admitted raping a 12-year-old girl during December 2013, including once on Christmas Eve, in the Town of Binghamton.
"Selfish you brainwashed my little girl ... for your sick pleasure," said the victim's mother, in a statement read by Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell. "She broke away from your abuse. She will continue to be an amazing girl."
Cornwell also read a prepared statement from the child victim, who said the abuse has led her to realize that men cannot be trusted.
"Thank you for making me a strong, independent woman," her statement said.
Cornwell said the victim disclosed the abuse after moving out of state and that this case should demonstrate to other victims how coming forward can help bring closure.
The victim and Winans were acquainted with each other. Although the accuser's name was disclosed in open court, this news organization does not identify victims of sexual assault.
Winans chose not to speak at Wednesday's sentencing, though Senior Assistant Public Defender Jonathan Rothermel maintained his client had accepted responsibility for his crime by pleading guilty.
The prearranged sentence was coupled by sharp words from Judge Kevin Dooley, who said Wednesday it was troubling to learn about the years of manipulation and control Winans exerted over the victim.
Dooley said Winans did everything he could to undermine her childhood, and equally troubling, Dooley added, was Winans did not seem to have any insight he did anything wrong.
"What you did to this girl is reprehensible," Dooley said.
Winans admitted having sex with the 12-year-old victim between Dec. 4 and 24 in 2013.
The accusations were first reported to law enforcement officials in early February, according to court records, and on March 2, state police arrested Winans. He was originally charged with a felony count of predatory sexual assault against a child, which carried a possible prison term of 10 years to life if convicted.

“An investigation determined Bigelow had sexual contact with two different victims less than eleven years old while in the Town of Guilford,” state police said.
Bigelow was arraigned in the Town of Guilford Court and was taken to the Chenango County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.

An Arkansas man who pleaded guilty Monday to the 2015 sexual assault of a 5-year-old girl was sentenced to four months in jail and fined $2,500, the Hot Springs Sentinel-Record reported.
Scott Dewayne Brookshire, 50, of Mountain Pine pleaded guilty to a felony count of second-degree sexual assault in Garland County Circuit Court.
He was sentenced to 120 days in jail and six years of probation and ordered to pay $2,500 as well as $670 in court costs, the paper reported. An order of protection was also issued preventing Brookshire from having any additional contact with the victim.
The victim's family reached the plea deal so the girl would not have to testify, according to the Sentinel-Record.
"There is always a concern putting a child that young on the witness stand and her having to talk about something she has probably tried to forget about since then. Bringing all that back up again," Chief Deputy Prosecutor Joe Graham told the paper.
According to an arrest affidavit, a report was filed with the Child Abuse Hotline on July 13, 2015, that stated the girl told her mother that Brookshire had made sexual contact with her.
The girl's parents reportedly confronted Brookshire who sent text messages to the father asking "for forgiveness and clarity."
Brookshire was arrested Aug. 19, 2015, and bonded out the same day, the paper reported.
Once he is released from jail, he is required to register as a sex offender.

A 42-year-old Aurora man has been charged with sexually assaulting a girl he knew beginning in August 2016.
Antonio Pina, of the 300 block of West Galena Boulevard, was arrested over the weekend after a warrant was issued charging him with one count of criminal sexual assault of a minor younger than 18 and six counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, according to Kane County court records.
Aurora police declined to comment on Pina's case because it was investigated by the Kane County Child Advocacy Center, which investigates crimes against children for the state's attorney's office.
Pina is accused of assaulting the girl beginning Aug. 1 and through May 3, when the arrest warrant was issued, according to court records.
He was being held at the Kane County jail on $200,000 bail. Defense attorney Nicole Sartori has asked that her client's bail be reduced to $100,000, as his family can post $10,000, according to court records.
Pina has lived in Aurora 18 years, is the owner-operator of his own flatbed tractor trailer truck and became a permanent U.S. resident in 2009, according to court records.
Pina doesn't have any previous arrests in Kane County for felonies or violent offenses, records show. He was arrested in July 2001 on charges of DUI and DUI with a blood-alcohol concentration of .08 or more, according to court records.
He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to alcohol treatment and a year of supervision, which he completed.
Pina is due in court Thursday. If convicted, he faces a top prison term of 15 years, along with registration as a sex offender.

A former Milton Hershey School ice hockey coach will serve 3 to 10 years behind bars after pleading no contest to charges he molested a student for several years.
Judge John F. Cherry also ordered Richard Allen Gingrich to serve a consecutive 10 years of probation.
Authorities say Gingrich, of York, molested the former Milton Hershey student numerous times while the boy was between 11 and 15 years old.
In December, Gingrich pleaded no contest to felony counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, indecent assault, and unlawful contact with minors.
The former student, who is now 27 years old, told police that Gingrich assaulted him in a locker room bathroom at the school’s hockey rink, at the coach’s apartments in Lebanon and Palmyra, and in a school supply building.
He said Gingrich continued to sexually assault him after the coach was dismissed from the school.

WILLMAR, Minn. — Jeramy John Wharton of Belgrade was sentenced to 12 years in prison Tuesday for raping and impregnating a 14-year-old girl.
Wharton, 38, pleaded guilty in March in Kandiyohi County District Court to first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He will be eligible for conditional release after serving 10 years of his sentence.
Wharton was given credit for three days already served in jail and ordered to pay $3,090 in court and victim assistance fees from his prison earnings. He will be required to register as a predatory offender.
According to court records, a 14-year-old girl told law enforcement that she woke up one night in April 2015, and Wharton was naked and on top of her. She said he claimed it was a dream.
She didn't tell anyone about it at first, because she was afraid, she said. She later gave birth to a child, and DNA results provided strong evidence that Wharton was the father.
Wharton knows and is in a position of authority over the girl, according to court records. When he was interviewed in April 2016, he told the detective that he took sleep medication and did not remember what he did while on the medication. He suggested the sexual assault may have occurred while he was on medication.
He denied telling the girl the incident was a dream and told the detective it would surprise him if he is the father of her child.

Forward Akundila appeared before Gweru Magistrate Mr Musaiona Shotgame facing one count of rape.
He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to May 19.
Prosecuting, Mr Edward Gwainda said on May 5 the complainant and her brother were sent by their mother to her friend’s house in Mkoba suburb.

“She greeted the accused person and told him that she had come to see him,” said Mr Gwainda.
He said Akundila who was alone ordered the complainant to enter into the house before he led her to his bedroom.
The accused person then sat the complainant on the bed and raped her once. After the rape he gave her a $1 coin and warned her not to tell anyone about the incident.
“The complainant reported the sexual assault to her mother who then accompanied her to report the matter to the police leading to Akundila’s arrest,” said Mr Gwainda.
The court heard that the complainant was referred to Gweru Provincial Hospital where she was medically examined and it was established that she had been raped.
