A 29-year-old Mid-South preacher was convicted of raping a 5-year-old, according to Shelby County District Attorney's Office.
A jury convicted Jarvis Gray of rape of a child and aggravated sexual battery. Gray called himself a prophet and had his congregation refer to him as "Prophet Gray."
The rape happened in July 2013. Gray raped the child while he was responsible for taking care of her and her siblings while the children's parents were away.

MEDIA COURTHOUSE >> A 57-year-old Upper Darby man was sentenced to seven to 40 years Thursday for sexually abusing a 5-year-old boy at his home on the 7200 block of Gilford Road.
Malcolm Gilliard entered a “no contest” plea before Delaware County Common Pleas Court Judge Richard Cappelli to one count of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, a felony of the first degree.
Police said the victim told a foster parent that Gilliard had repeatedly sexually abused him. During a subsequent interview with the county’s Children and Youth Services, the boy described having sexual contact with Gilliard, including oral sex.
The victim said Gilliard had also shown him pornographic videos on his cell phone. All of the inappropriate contact occurred at the Gilford Road residence. The victim and his two siblings have been in foster care since 2015.
Upper Darby police raided Gilliard’s home in April 2016 and arrested him on a slew of charges including aggravated indecent assault of a child, indecent assault with forcible compulsion and endangering the welfare of a child. The remaining charges were withdrawn as part of the plea.
Gilliard was incarcerated at the county prison in Concord from April 19 until he posted bail April 29. Assistant District Attorney Danielle Gallaher, standing in for Alan Borowsky Thursday, said bail was revoked Dec. 20 and Gilliard has been incarcerated since that time.
Gilliard did not comment Thursday, but defense council David Desiderio noted his client had never denied the allegations.
“He wanted to get this behind him and he hopes very fervently that the child is better, and he will do anything he can to rehabilitate himself,” said Desiderio.
In addition to prison time, Gilliard will have to register as a sex offender for life and provide a DNA sample to state police. He will also undergo an evaluation by the state Sexual Offenders Assessment Board prior to sentencing to determine whether he meets the criteria for a sexually violent predator.
Gilliard was given credit for time served, but is not eligible for early release.

Lubbock County sheriff’s deputies arrested a 46-year-old man Thursday in connection with a sexual assault investigation involving two girls.

Marcus Edward Barrios was booked about 9 a.m. Thursday into the Lubbock County Detention Center on three first-degree felony counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, which carries a punishment of five years to life in prison.
He also faces a lesser charge of indecency with a child by sexual contact, which carries a punishment of two to 20 years in prison.
He is accused of sexually abusing two sisters ages 13 and 11, according to an arrest warrant released Thursday.
The girls’ mother called deputies on Monday after her daughters told her about Barrios’ abuse.
The girls’ revelation came after she and Barrios had an argument and Barrios reportedly threatened to hit her and the girls then stormed out of the home.
The older girl said the abuse started with fondling about two to three years ago, but the abuse escalated with him having sex with her, according to the warrant.
The warrant indicates a more recent episode, as one of the girls told deputies she had to remove her bed sheet to let it dry “because of Marcus.”
Deputies collected the girl’s nightgown and the bed sheet.
The younger girl told deputies Barrios fondled her chest, the warrant states.
A sexual assault nurse examiner found injuries on the older girl that were consistent with her accusation, the warrant states.
Barrios remained at the detention center Friday. His bond was set at $200,000 for the sexual assault charge and $50,000 for the indecency charge.

An Odessa man pleaded guilty to continuous sexual abuse of a child Thursday and received 38 years in prison, Ector County District Attorney Bobby Bland said in a press release Friday.
The conviction for Jose Salais, 43, comes 10 years after the sexual abuse began. Salais was charged for the incident in 2011, but absconded to Mexico in 2012, according to the release.
“He was on an ankle monitor and he cut that off and then he ran to Mexico,” Bland said. “We’ve been trying to get him back for the past four years.”
Salais was extradited back to Ector County earlier this year due to the collaboration of the U.S. Marshals Service, the government of Mexico and the Ector County District Attorney’s Office.
“We made sure he was brought back,” Bland said. “Justice was done.”
“The victim’s family supported this plea and felt it was in the best interest of the victim,” the district attorney said in the release.
Salais was arrested in 2011 following an investigation into claims Odessa police received that he had intercourse with, performed sex acts on and forced two girls to perform sex acts on him beginning when they were ages 6 and 7.
“The family wanted us to get this over with and we were able to do this without the children having to go through anything else,” Bland said.

Man pleads guilty to child sex abuse May 19, 2017 Odessa American

A Prineville man was sentenced to more than nine years in prison Monday for luring a 15-year-old boy to a Bend hotel, where he recorded the two of them having sex.
Christopher Stout, 43, was arrested Feb. 21 and charged with 20 counts of various luring and sexual abuse crimes. He pleaded guilty Thursday to four of the counts: luring a minor, third-degree sodomy, using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct and first-degree encouraging child sexual abuse. Per a plea agreement, the other 16 charges were dismissed.
Deschutes County Circuit Judge Walter Miller accepted the deal Monday, sentencing Stout to 111 months in prison.
After his release, Stout will also have to register as a sex offender and will not be able to have contact with minors or use the internet without permission from a judge or his post-prison supervision officer.
The investigation into Stout started when the victim’s mother found an SD memory card in the driveway of her Bend home. She put the card into her computer and found footage of her son having sex with Stout. The victim eventually told her he met Stout on Tumblr, a photo-based social media platform, and the two began to chat. The victim said Stout knew his age and didn’t have an issue with it. They sent each other sexually explicit videos of themselves and agreed to meet in person, according to court testimony.
According to court documents, the correspondence started around Jan. 1. Around Jan. 8, the victim sneaked out of his home, and Stout picked him up and drove him to the Double Tree Inn in Bend, where Stout showed the victim a video of two underage boys having sex.
The two then had sex, the victim told police, and Stout told the victim he could not tell anyone. Stout also told the victim he had done similar things before, court documents state.
After finding the memory card containing the videos, the victim’s mother reported the sexual abuse to police on Feb. 13. Police searched Stout’s Prineville home and found videos of the sexual encounter, as well as a small amount of methamphetamine.
For the charge of using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct, Stout was sentenced to 70 months. That crime falls under Measure 11, Oregon’s mandatory-minimum sentencing law for violent crimes. Because of that, he will not be eligible for early release based on good behavior or participation in prison programs. He is eligible for programs and good time on the other counts.
Stout, who at the time was a U.S. Forest Service employee, has no prior criminal history. Before being sentenced Monday, he apologized for his actions, calling them “reprehensible.”
“I would like to express just how deeply sorry I am for my actions,” he said.

Prineville man gets 9 years for child sex abuse Aubrey Wieber The Bulletin May 22, 2017

ANDERSON — A former Indianapolis man was sentenced to 70 years in prison Monday for the repeated sexual abuse of two sisters over several years.
A Madison County jury last month found 42-year-old Jose G. Echartea-De La Suente guilty of two counts of Class A felony child molesting, and three counts of Class C felony child molesting, although Deputy Prosecutor Andrew Hopper said many more charges could have been added.
Echartea-De La Suente fled to Florida from Madison County after a warrant for his arrest was issued in December 2012.
He was arrested in March 2015 for a traffic violation, giving a false identity, and possessing a counterfeit driver's license. He was also held as an out-of-state fugitive, according to authorities in Lee County, Florida.
He was released from the Lee County Jail in on April 15, 2016, and returned to Madison County less than a week later.
"He was on the run and eventually picked up in Florida," Hopper said. "Being from 2012, we are pleased to have this one resolved."
He said the girls lived in fear night after night, and then there were years of uncertainty while Echartea-De La Suente was in Florida when the girls didn't know if he would stand trial.
Echartea-De La Suente's attorney, Jill Gonzalez, argued for a lessor sentence in part because her client doesn't speak English, or understand the American criminal justice system. She also argued he likely will be deported before serving his full sentence, an apparent reference to President Donald Trump's vow to deport undocumented immigrants, especially those who've been convicted of serious crimes.
Madison Circuit Court Division 4 Judge David A. Happe did not comment on that prospect, but he said Echartea-De La Suente has never expressed any remorse or taken responsibility for his actions.
Anderson detectives who investigated the case said in court statements the sexual abuse began in 2005 and continued through October 2012.
That's when one of the children was taken by her mother to Community Hospital for a sexual assault exam on suspicion of sexual misconduct by Echartea-De La Suente.
The girl was 11 or 12 years old at the time of the incidents. It was alleged that Echartea-De La Suente fondled the girl and performed a sexual act on her while another relative was sleeping in the room. The children's mother was told about the incident and moved the girls to another house to avoid contact with him.

Woodway police on Thursday arrested a Waco man accused of sexually abusing a child at a Woodway residence between 2013 and 2015.
Dung Van Nguyen, 52, was arrested as he drove home from work after a child made an outcry of abuse on May 6, Woodway Public Safety Director Yost Zakhary said. The child was younger than 14 years old and an acquaintance of Nguyen, Zakhary said.
According to the arrest affidavit, Nguyen sexually abused the child multiple times a week for about three years, specially in 2012 to 2015. The victim told authorities that the child "had to kick" Nguyen to get him to stop assault the child.
Nguyen is charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony, Zakhary said. He was being held Friday in McLennan County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.
