Educational assistant charged with rape of students

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A former educational assistant at Rio Grande High School faces a second charge of criminal sexual penetration a week after sexual allegations against him first came to light.

On April 24, a former student told the school and detectives that when he was 17 he had had an ongoing sexual relationship with 36-year-old Luis Chavez, and he was worried Chavez had victimized other students, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court. Chavez was arrested and charged with criminal sexual penetration of a minor.
Four days later – the day after the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office said five more possible victims had come forward – another former student told detectives he had been raped by the school employee.
Monica Armenta, a spokeswoman for the Albuquerque Public School District, said Chavez has been fired. She said when he was hired in January 2013 he passed his background check.
On April 28, Sheriff’s Office detectives were tipped off about a former student who had been assaulted by Chavez in 2014 and 2015, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court.
When detectives interviewed the student, he told them that when he was 17, Chavez touched, grabbed and then raped him at school functions and on school property.
The student said the first assault happened while he was in Taos with Chavez for an extracurricular activity event in January 2014. He said Chavez assaulted him on several occasions throughout that year, and that he “felt embarrassed and confused and was afraid to tell anyone about the incident.”
Then, he said, Chavez raped him in a classroom at the high school while they were setting up for another event.
“(The student) stated that for the rest of the year he made sure that he was never alone with Luis and actively avoided contact with him,” the detective wrote in the complaint.
Chavez was arrested again Tuesday and booked into the county jail on a $100,000 cash-only bond.
Several students have come forward with information regarding Luis,” said deputy Felicia Romero, a BCSO spokeswoman. “Detectives believe there may be more victims due to the length of employment at Rio Grande High School.”
BCSO asks anyone with information about Chavez to contact detectives at (505) 377-6565.
