Paedophile Scout leader jailed

A man sexually abused by a Salford scout leader in the 1960s found the strength to speak out because he was worried his grandson could also be targeted by the paedophile.
John Francis Parrish, 70, who was a scout master in Salford, assaulted the youngster almost every week over a four year period in the late 1960s.
But the victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, suffered in silence for more than 50 years until his grandson expressed an interest in joining the Scouts.
The man was worried Parrish might still be abusing children.
He revealed he'd been sexually assaulted by the scout master between 1966 and 1970.
Almost every week Parrish would accompany him to the toilet and sexually assault him while whispering: ‘Be quiet’.
Parrish, now of Castle Gates, Shrewsbury, pleaded guilty to six counts of indecent assault on a male under the age of 14.
He was jailed for eight years at Manchester Crown Court, on Crown Square, on Friday.
Detective Constable Cathy Blain of GMP’s Salford Borough, said: “This has been a long and complex investigation and I have nothing but praise for the man who so courageously came forward and reported the abuse.
Parrish abused his position of trust in the worst possible way and my only hope is that the prosecution brings some closure after he has suffered in silence for more than 50 years.”
An NSPCC spokesperson said: “Parrish exploited his position to sexually abuse a vulnerable child who had placed his trust in him.
“His victim has shown incredible bravery in coming forward and it’s this decision that has finally brought Parrish to justice.
“To speak out about child sexual abuse takes a huge amount of courage and it is vital that victims are listened to - no matter how much time has passed.
“Any adults with concerns about a child can contact the NSPCC helpline 24/7 on 0808 8005000, and children can contact Childline on 0800 1111.”
A spokesman for the Scout Association said: “We are aware of this case. Parrish has not been a Member of the Scout Movement since 1969. It is appropriate that he has been punished for his crimes carried out in the 1960’s.
"The Scout Association carries out stringent vetting of all adults who work with young people and requires them to work to a strict code of practice outlined in the “Young People First” Code of Practice. See"
