Woman sentenced for 'heinous' child porn crimes

ST. JOHNS — In a tearful statement, Carol Boak said today that she was raised "with all the right boundaries" until she met Kenneth Thelen, who "opened up a world I had never been a part of."

Then 29th Circuit Court Judge Michelle Rick ordered her to spend at least 12 years in prison for child porn.
Boak, 51, of St. Johns, pleaded guilty in February to three felony charges related to child pornography. At a sentencing hearing today, Rick cited the "heinous" nature of Boak's crimes before imposing a sentence of between 12 and 20 years — well above the state guideline of 57 to 95 months, or about 5 to 8 years.
"I don't have confidence that you're low risk," Rick said, referring to the likelihood that Boak would commit more crimes. "The conduct that you engaged in involving two children is heinous conduct. It turns my stomach."
In addition to serving at least 12 years for child pornography, Boak will serve concurrent sentences of 16 to 48 months for possessing the material and 4 to 7 years for distributing it.
She is the last of three people to be sentenced for their roles in a ring uncovered last year. Police said 52-year-old Terry Plowman photographed his sexual assault of a girl and then agreed to share those photos with Boak after she requested them, according to court records.
Boak also created her own pornographic images of a second child, officials said. Both victims were younger than 10 when the crimes were committed.
Plowman, of St. Johns, was sentenced last month to between eight and 20 years after pleading guilty to one count each of producing child pornography and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, a misdemeanor.
Thelen, 43, of Westphalia, also received the photos of the assault of the child from Boak, police testified after searching his phone and computer. At a hearing in December, Thelen pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to produce child pornography and one count of possessing child pornography. He was sentenced in March to spend at least 14 months in prison.
As part of Boak's plea deal, prosecutors dropped charges of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and sodomy.
"I worked so hard to do good for so long," Boak told Rick before she was sentenced. "I have never been more sorry about anything in my entire life."
The grandmother of one of the victims spoke directly to Boak during the hearing.
"I can't wrap my head around why you... wanted pictures of (the victim)," she said. "It's disgusting."
"You have ruined lives and committed unthinkable acts," the woman told Boak. "It scares me that someday you will be back out on the street and in public."
